JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – East Kalimantan Police have apprehended two suspected killers of monkeys and orangutans, species which are protected, in the area of oil palm plantation of the village of Puan Cepak, in the district of District Muara Kaman, East Kalimantan. The arrest was made on Saturday (19.11.2011) last week.

Those two are M aka G and M. Keduanya were employees of a Chemical company PT. K which owns a plantation.
“We arrested two people suspected of being murderers of orangutans.
The two men recognized the fact that they kill monkeys and orangutans because they are considered nuisance for oil palm plantations.
“In the field, the animals which often eat palm are monkeys and orangutans. Because the offender is considered nuisance, we destroy these animals,” he continued.
The arrest was made after examination of seven witnesses from the University Munawarman who acknowledged that these two animals were protected species.
It was established that the murders were performed using a BB gun shooting and the killed animals were chased with a dog. As results of the arrest, the police collected evidences such as bones of orangutans and monkeys and their pictures after shooting.
For the act of the murder of two protected endangered animals, said the Police, both citizen will be judged under Act No. 5 of 1990 on Conservation of Natural Resources and Ecosystem, in article 21 paragraph (a) and (b) junto Article 40 paragraph (2 ). Both suspects are now detained at the police station of Kukar.
