MERAPI'S ERUPTION EXPECTED (APRIL 2006)
From The Jakarta Post

Yogyakarta's Sultan Hamengkubuwono X went to the slopes of rumbling Mt. Merapi on Sunday to urge residents to evacuate, as the mountain's escalating activity was marked by the upward movement of magma.

Merapi's crater has been deformed by new magma appearing at its top, a condition traditionally regarded as a sign of the mountain's imminent explosion.
The magma movement has also forced lava on its western part into Lamat river, flowing in the direction of the Central Java city of Magelang.
White smoke spewed from the mount reached 900 meters in height Sunday morning.
Dewi Sri, an expert at the Yogyakarta Volcanological Technology Development and Assessment Agency, said despite the rising activity her agency had not raised the mount's status from "on-the-alert" to "danger".

Meanwhile at Tlogolele village in Selo district in the Central Java city of Boyolali, evacuees demanded Sunday that they be allowed to return to their houses.
They are increasingly bored because of the lack of certainty as to when Mt. Merapi, which has been on alert status since April 12, will actually erupt.
"I'm tired of living for a week in the makeshift shelters. It's so cold during the night, sometimes also during the day," said Mintardjo, 70, an evacuee from Stabelan hamlet at Tlogolele.

Mintardjo feels more comfortable in his home, which is located four kilometers from the crater. There he could tend his chili plants before looking for grass for his cattle.
"Looking for grass is like sport, it makes the body healthier. For our daily needs I can just take them from our fields," he said. "We haven't got any 'direction' as to when Mt. Merapi will explode," said Suparto, 70, another resident of Stabelan hamlet. By "direction" he meant the fleeing of animals downward from the slopes to the nearby kampongs.

Evacuees are also finding that they're spending more money than usual.
Selo district Dahat Wilarso admitted he could not prevent the evacuees from leaving their refugee camps. "Many of them are even getting more stressful," he said.

At least 160 evacuees from Tlogolele and Klakah villages left their makeshift shelter on Saturday, and by Sunday only 26 people were living there.
