Magellan, Vasco da Gama opened the way to Spices Islands. Today they are names the Malukku Islands and belong to Indonesia, the major cities are Ambon and Ternate. Spices are still important for their economy but far less than before. They are wonderful places to discover and you can still learn a lot on spices and their importance few centuries ago. This site bring to you the history of this archipelago and it is an introduction to travel and enjoy the Spice Island. Mustard, peper, chily, nutmeg, cinnamon... all kind of spices are described and the way you can use them in cooking and medecine.

During the 15th century Portuguese navigators pressed farther and farther down the uncharted west coast of Africa. They were searching for a sea route to India, whose highly valued spices promised wealth to European traders.

August 1509, Magellan and a mighty Portuguese fleet consisting of 5 ships, with more than 200 soldiers, left India to reach Malacca. who was dominating the Moluccas, Borneo and the Spice Islands.
Diego Lopes de Sequeira, supervised the operations. He anchored his fleet in Malacca on the 11th of September 1509.
