According to FAO, Indonesia produced almost 80% of the world's clove output in 2005 followed at a distance by Madagascar and Tanzania.

Cloves, which scientific name is Syzygium aromaticum, or Eugenia aromaticum or Eugenia caryophyllata, are the dried flower buds of a tree in the family Myrtaceae. The English name Cloves derives from the French "Clou de girofle", clou meaning nail, as the buds are roughly similar to the shape of a nail. They are used dried or grounded as an aromatic ingredient or spice in cuisine in several countries all over the world.

The plant is native to the Caribbean islands. Today, is has been introduced to large parts of South East Asia (Indochina, Malaysia, Indonesia).
